  SERVED IN THE WAR OF 1812 AS A SOLDIER IN cAPTAIN JOHN ALEXANDER'S COMPANY. HOME WAS ACROSS FROM THE PRESENT MARYVILLE, TN POST OFFICE. HE HELPED ESTABLISH EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS. DONATED LOT ACROSS FROM THE SITE OF THE OLD COURT HOUSE FOR PORTER ACADEMY WHICH BECAME SOUTHERN AND WESTERN THEOLOGICAL SEMINARY AND LATER MARYVILLE COLLEGE. SERVED IN THE WAR OF 1812 AS A SOLDIER IN cAPTAIN JOHN ALEXANDER'S COMPANY. Excerpts from pgs.65-66 of "John and Esther Houston Montgomery, 1719 -1973": "John, the first son of James and Margaret Weir Montgomery, was born in Virginia, 1778, and married around 1798 Mary Love, daughter of Samuel and Mary Love who also came from Virginia.
