5. Per letters from Alma Baldwin dated 14 Nov., 1978 and her daughter, Hazel Bruni dated 13 Nov., 1978:
George Edwin Montgomery owned a house in Cincinnati, Washington Co., Arkansas which Alma remembers personally. He also owned a store, but Alma couldn't remember exactly where it was. Alma's father, Marion Cook, husband of Bernethia J. Montgomery, bought the house from George. Alma and her sisters were born in this house; based on their birth dates, George must have sold the house between 1890-1897. The house was supplied with water from Rennick Creek, which was downhill from the house. Alma does not know where George and Mary moved after Mr. Cook bought the house; they may even have all lived together. The house must have been on a farm because Alma describes her mother's struggle to keep the farm going after Mr. Cook's death in 1903; her story indicates that the farm was adjacent to the house.
!6. Per letter from Joseph Carl Montgomery dated 14 Feb., 1979: a. Confirmed that his father, Oscar, and uncle, Otis, lived with George Edwin when they were children.
b. Says George Edwin was a farmer and a "wonderful man." Also says George Edwin and family were Baptists.
c. Believes the family lost everything in the Civil War and scattered as a result.

!1. Joseph Carter Montgomery was probably born on the family farm just across

the river from Patrick, Arkansas. Zola Montgomery Spencer Brashears said that her father, Richard, told her that he was born in a house that was there.
Since the 1860 Census showed that their father, George E. was still living in Madison Co., Ark., in 1860, it seems likely that they were still living in the same place as when Richard was born 4 years earlier. Grace Montgomery in Jan.1978 gave the birthplace of J.C. as Carthage, MO but there is no known source of that info.

2. According to a taped conversation with his son, J.Howard Montgomery, in 1965, Joe Montgomery went to Texas when he was about 15 (approx. 1875). He ran cattle in Williamson County (near Austin).

3. According to Alma Baldwin,his grand-daughter, Joe returned to Arkansas and

tried to get his brothers and sisters to move to Texas with him. At some time he was able to persuade Alma's mother, Bernethia Jane, to move to Hill County,TX. Per a letter dated 14 Feb. 1979 from Carl Montgomery, Joe also offered to help "set up" Carl's father, Oscar, on a farm in Texas. The date of this offer is unknown. Oscar did not make the move due to his growing family.

4. In 1888, Joe married Belva Lou Matthews at her parent's home with Rev. John Miller performing the ceremony according to Grace Montgomery. Grace also believed that the Matthews family lived in Hill County at that time.

5. A note on the back of a portrait of the J.C. Montgomery family says:

"3E, 4 1/2S Near Mt.View Schoolhouse" - These are apparently directions to the Montgomery family farm in Hill County. Grace Montgomery said this would be near Lovell, which is where her husband, Howard, said that he grew up and went to school. From the size of the children in the picture, it was apparently made about 1903 and it was made at a Hillsboro studio.

6. The Montgomery family moved to Haskell County, TX in 1909. Per the land

records in the Haskell County courthouse, Mr. Montgomery bought a 433-acre farm in the Whitt's Chapel community (later called Howard), about 3.5 miles

northeast of the current Paint Creek school. They built a two-story house there.

7. J.C. and Bell moved to 600 South Avenue G in Haskell in late 1925 after

retiring from farming. They lived there until his death.

!According to Lelia Montgomery Cox, she was told by her mother, Belva, that her sister, Ruby Rebecca, died of the croup. They were apparently traveling by wagon from Kerens, TX, where the Matthews family lived, back to Brandon. They stopped overnight with a family along the way. Belle did not have a dry diaper for the baby, and was reluctant to ask for one from their hosts, so the baby stayed wet all night. As a result, she caught the croup and died.

Per letters of Alma Cook Baldwin:

After the death of Marion Cook in 1903, Bernethia tried to operate their farm

alone. She left her young daughters (ages 5,3,2) alone in the house while she went out to work in the fields. She used the bedposts to hold the girls by their long skirt tails and would check on them on each "round." She also did quilting for people at night. In about 1905, two of Bernethia's brothers,

believed to be Joseph C. and George W., came and moved her to Texas with them. On the way they visited another brother, Morgan, who was quite ill. They moved to a rented house at Whitney, Texas near Itasca. George lived near Itasca and Joe was at Brandon, about 9 miles east of Itasca. In 1906, Bernethia married Sam R. Viney. Hazel says that Bernethia was living with various relatives when she (Hazel) was growing up. When Hazel was about 5 (1923), Bernethia lived with them, and she said she listened to many stories told by Bernethia including many family stories.

Cook Baldwin in 1978, Marion Cook, Bernethia Montgomery's first husband, was in

the lumber business in Washington. Their first child, Myrtle, was stillborn

(conflicting statements say Walla Walla or Dayton, Washington) and was buried

in Olympia, Washington in 1890. Cook suffered a logging injury. Sometime

before the next child (Alma) was born, they moved to Cincinnati, Washington

Co., Arkansas and bought a house (perhaps a farm) from Bernethia's father,

George Edwin Montgomery. George and Mary Buck Montgomery may have lived there

with them for a while. Marion Cook died in 1903 of complications from his

logging injury at age 37.
