"Alvis David, a direct ancestor of our family, was born September 28,1835, in Caswell County. He became a captain in the Confederate Army, serving as Adjutant to General Alfred Moore Scales. He later married the widowedsister of Governor Scales, Annie Elizabeth Scales Lawson. Alvis David owned and operated a store on the corner of Main and E. Market Streets, whiletravelling as a shoe manufacturer's representative. With his father-in-law, Dr.Robert Scales, he was an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Reidsville." Betty Gerdes believed him to be a noted breeder of Clydesdales. I believe she met him, "Drew", during the war - which war I am not sure. Joan and I met his widow, Marion R. Montgomery at Nether Hall in December 1980. She owned a copy of the Hugh Montgomery/Jean Barbour Family Bible, plus portraits of some Montgomery ancestors. Marion said her daughter was interested in the Montgomery family, however when I wrote to the daughter I received no reply. A Brigade of militia was raised and mobilized at Charlotte, NC, engaged to serve for six months to GA and SC. | 249 | !BIRTH-DEATH: Information from Obit in the Macon Telegraph 1924 Mrs. Mary Virginia Chapman Mrs. Mary Virginia Chapman, age 74 years, widow of the late A.T.Chapman, died at the residence of her son Harry D. Chapman, 305 Adams Street yesterday afternoon at 3:20 o'clock, after a very brief illness. Mrs. Chapman hadbeen a resident of Macon the greater portion of her life. She was a chartermember of the Tattnall Square Baptist Church of which she was always a most devoted member. In her own quiet way she was very busy ministering to others inthe community. Surviving are one son, Harry D. Chapman, of Macon, and one daughter, Miss Lila May Chapman, of Birmingham, Ala., and a number of grandchildren. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 4 o'clockfrom the Tattnall Square Baptist Church, Rev. H.M. Fugate, pastor, officiating.
