  !CENSUS: 1851, 1861 Scotland; Tongland; Argrennan !DEATH: Newcastle on Tyne; 1911 According to Betty Gerdes (Bertha Brown), Jane and her brother Andrew were raised by their uncle, after the death of their mother. This may have been Hugh. Betty thought her father, Hugh Montgomery Brown was named after Hugh. However, on further consideration, and based on some comments by one Jennie Mundell of Castle-Douglas, who worked for Hugh, it may have been the family of William Montgomery of Hermitage. (Hugh may have taken over running things on the death of William in 1832.) Andrew was known as Big Andrew in the household to distinguish him from his uncle's son, who was known as Wee Andrew. The Scottish census(1851 & 61) show that Jane was born in the USA,"New York". Information on the Tongland gravestone says Jane died at age 80; Death Certificate says death at age 80; 1851 & 1861 Census show her to be born in 1832. Place of death, 15 Cromwell St, Newcastle/Tyne. Death cause: senile decay, heart failure; informant M.Brown, grandaughter
