      HUGH LAWSON MONTGOMERY, SON OF JAMES MONTGOMERY AND ELIZABETH MCCONNELL: NAME IS FIRST IN GEORGIA RECORDS WHEN HE WAS EMPLOYED IN 1786 TO SURVEY THE LINE BETWEEN FRANKLIN COUNTY AND THE INDIANS.
      (KNOWN AS HAWKINS LINE). THE ORIGINAL PLOTS ARE ON FILE AND BEAR HIS SIGNATURE. HE WAS APPOINTED THE FIRST SURVEYOR OF JACKSON COUNTY.
      IN 1818 HE SURVEYED AND MAPPED THE BOUNDARY LINE BETWEEN GEORGIA AND TENNESSEE.
      HE REPRESENTED JACKSON COUNTY IN THE STATE LEGISLATURE FOR 1806, 1807, 1808, 1809, 1810 AND 1811.
      HE WAS IN THE STATE SENATE 1812, THROUGH 1818 AND FROM 1823 TO 1825.
      HE MADE HIS HEADQUARTERS NEAR CALHOUN, TENNESSEE AND SERVED UNTIL THE INDIANS WERE MOVED WEST IN 1838. HIS SALARY WAS $1,500.00 A YEAR, WHICH WAS QUITE LARGE FOR THEN. UPON RETIREMENT HE WAS GIVEN A TRACT OF 3,000 ACRES IN CHATTOGA COUNTY, GEORGIA.
      WAS ONE OF FIRST OFFICIALS OF THYATIRA PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH ESTABLISHED 1795 IN JACKSON COUNTY.
      1808 WAS JUSTICE OF THE PEACE.
      JUDGE OF INFERIOR COURT, JACKSON COUNTY 1811, 1816, 1817, 1818, 1823, 1824 AND 1825.
      APPOINTED TRUSTEE OF JACKSON COUNTY ACADEMY BY ACT OF GEORGIA LEGISLATURE 20 NOVEMBER 1818.
