William lived in Gwinnett Co.,GA before moving to Vanns Valley, near Rome, Georgia.
DISPUTE from Judy Becker, CMS 823:
The other (dispute) has to do with the identification of James' youngest son William (born of m2, to Susannah Strange) as "William, Rev." This apparently an identification of William as a Presbyterian minister, which is a "factoid" that also appears in James Hurst's book, and I have begun seeing it other places. This dude is buried just outside Cave Spring, GA, in what was a private cemetery (now in the middle of someone else's land), right next to his first wife, her sister, and his 2 youngest sons, both of whom were killed in The War of Northern Aggression. I have stood on his grave, and checked it out. I also have copies of the Floyd county census records for 1850, and 1860, in both of which William listed his occupation as "farmer." The latter is consistent with our family tradition, which did not have any notion in it that this William was a minister. My understanding is that this is a vocation, not something one takes up and then later abandons. I think there is a confusion between this William and another William Montgomery who was a Presbyterian minister in Jackson County, GA, and then went to Adams County, MS.
Per email from Judy Montgomery Becker, CMS 823, dated 29 Jun 2009:
"The actual Cave Spring Cemetery is across the street from where William and his wife (plus the others) are buried...on private land. There is a cedar tree, and then a fence around the small graveyard. When I was young, the fence was wrought iron, but I am told the cows used to hurt themselves rubbing against it, so the replaced it with wood...the two other Montgomery men are Christopher Stiles (or Styles) Montgomery and George Cicero Montgomery. If you look at the dates of death you will see that they are both in the early 1860s. Both dudes were killed in battles in Virginia. They are two of William's sons."
"Keep in mind that William was 94 when he died. Amazing in that day and age. Born in the 1780s, and died in 1877. Fought in the War of 1812 and lived through the Civil War.There is a church still existing in Lawrenceville, (Gwinnett Co.,) , GA named Fairview Presbyterian as to which William and his wife Catherine Boyle were charter members (in 1826 if I remember correctly.) There are some Montgomery folk buried in the graveyard at that cemetery - including William's son Middleton Boyle Montgomery, another son William who apparently died in his 20s, and the parents of Mary Gallatin Stewart..."
