!BIOGRAPHY:
The death certificate shows that Andrew Jackson Matthews died Nov.1, 1930 in
Cameron County, TX (Brownsville.) Although there is no family record of where
Andrew died, the name and initial on this Certificate plus the date of death
strongly indicates that it is for our Andrew J. Matthews.
Visited Kerens Cemetery on west side of Kerens TX in October 1992 and found
3 graves in 4-person plot in northwest quadrant:
* Andrew Carl Matthews (son of Andrew & Josie) - stone marker
* Andrew J. Matthews - 1891 - 1930 on steel marker from funeral home
* Josephine Carter - 1893 - 1979 on steel marker from funeral home (This is
believed to be Josephine Garrett Matthews; she is known to have remarried, and
SSI Index shows she died in June 1979.
According to Grace Montgomery, Andrew Montgomery inherited a considerable
amount of ranch land around Kerens from his father, R.C. Matthews. He also
inherited the tract of land in Haskell Co. where Mr. Matthews home was located.
However, he apparently never lived there, and the place was eventually sold to
pay off debts. J.H. and Grace Montgomery often indicated that Andrew was an
alcoholic and a spendthrift, and that was the reason that tract of land was
lost from the family.
