      page 201. HENRY MACLIN ( 1856-1929 ) - Pipneer Public School Educator,was
born at "White Oaks Farm," Greensville County, July 13, 1856, the son ofHenry
and Matilda Wyche Walker, who were married in 1848. He was educated inprivate
schools in the county. In 1877 he married Mamie Virginia Smith. Therewere two
children born to this union, John and Mary. His wife died in 1889. Mr.
Maclin's second marriage was to Katherine Tansill of Culpeper, VA. Miss
Tansill, at this time, was a teacher at Belfield Seminary. To thismarriage
were born, Lucy, Henry, Jr., Benjamin, and Tansill.
Henry Maclin, pioneer in public school education, was Superintendent of
Greensville County Public Schools from 1897 until his death on August 23,1929.
During his administration great strides were made in public educationfor both
whites and Negro children (in physical plants as well as provision formore
teachers.) Many principals who were trained by him went on to attain
prominence in higher educational circles in the State. WhileeSuperintendent
of Schools he served as Mayor of Emporia (1903-1909), an unusualcombination.
In correspondence with the Attorney General of Virginia he was informedthat he
could hold the office of Mayor while an acting superintendent of schoolsdue to
the lack of qualified men at the time.
Mr. Maclin was a dynamic personality. He came from a prominent Virginia
family. he was the grandson of Augustine Willis and Polly Jones Maclin
(married 1799), great-grandson of Thomas and Ann Willis Maclin.
Mr. Maclin's ancestor, William Maclin, was an early settler in thissection of
Virginia, having come from paisley, Scotland. In 1704 he received agrant of
land in Surry County. In 1736 he received grants of land in Brunswick(later
Greensville). William's son John was the father of Frederick Maclin.
