McCabe. Article on pgs 341-343 by W. Harold Medlock & James W. Medlock,Jr.
As a farmer he acquired many acres of land and several slaves. Before1850, he
moved to Marthasville (now Atlanta, Fulton County) where the present Grace
Methodist Church is located.
His home faced what was then Pittman Street and is now Monroe Drive atPonce
De Leon Avenue. His property reached beyond the present Sears Roebuck tothe
east, Henry Grady High School to the north, Fort Street on the west, North
Avenue on the south, and to Johnson Road in the northeast. He owned astore in
Atlanta, that was run by son-in-law..Joel Yarborough..located at FivePoints.
It was built of rocks picked up around that site by his slaves.
During the Civil War John refugged with his wife, daughters and
daughter-in-law, Vilenah Antoinette Mason Medlock, to Sandersville in
Washington Co. where his brother, Lewis Henry Medlock, was a newspaper
publisher. In Sandersville, he signed the oath of amnesty, which waasnecessary
before he could take possession of his property or vote.
From History of Gwinnett County Georgia..article by A. M. Johnson..Johnwas the
only son of Isham who remained in Gwinnett as late as 1847. It was thenhe
moved to Atlanta.
