Notes - !BIRTH-MARRIAGE-DEATH: History of Gwinnett County, GA and informationsent by
W. Harold Medlock...Little is known of his education today, except it was
adequate for the era in which he lived and his vocation. He was aMethodist, as
was his family. Faced with disastrous crops on the farm and the additional
needs of his growing fmaily, James was lured by tales of instant wealthto be
had in the California Gold Rush. Groups of men from every state crossedplains
and mountains, and many went by boat through the water routes then of the
Isthmus of Panama. He was but twenty two when he placed his wife and sonsunder
the watchful care of her parents until his return, and headed for theGold Rush
with a money belt fastened to his waist. But tragedy annihilated thisfamily,
with the exception of the eldest son, within two years. Cholera wasrampant,
and took the life of James while on board ship enroute to the Pacificcoast. He
was buried at sea. Son George died in Jan 1851; daughter Georgia, born 4months
after her father's death, bied in Jul 1852; wife Margaret died 10Aug 1852on
the farm at Minden, LA. Causes of their deaths are uncertain. George,Georgia
and Margaret were buried in Minton, LA. Information also on chart sentto me
by Mary Frances Gertz, 2961 Tudor, Memphis, TN 78127.
