    • Mary Montgomery was a 1st cousin of John C. Calhoun.

      According to family tradition, Mary married in Ireland, but lost her husband. She came to the U.S. as a widow, supposedly especially to marry James Patterson, a large landowner, and neighbor of her brother, Thomas Montgomery.
